Biography / CV of Ray Castell

Ray Castell grew up on the coast of North Yorkshire. ?The images imprinted on my mind in the time I spent exploring the magnificent coast and rock pools, hiking and camping in the stunning North York Moors and experiencing the amazing fiery ballet of the steel works whilst working as an apprentice and young engineer have stayed with me throughout my life. These images and feelings, combined with years of travelling, living and working in remote and island communities provide me with a huge fund of ideas for sculptures?.

Ray`Castell has always been able to sketch and has done some painting. He also spent some time experimenting with clay, but it was when he tried stone sculpture on a course in the Tout Quarry on the Island of Portland that he knew he`d found the medium he needed. ?Suddenly, I had tools I understood and a medium I thought I understood. This was to be my new journey!?.

Since then Ray, whilst still carving, has developed work in other media.

Artist Statement of Ray Castell

Ray Castell`s Statement
Most of my sculptures are based on natural shapes that to me are flowing and calming, or which attempt to express an idea that is meaningful to me. I have little interest in anatomical accuracy and try to strip away detail in an attempt to encapsulate the essence of the forms that evoke in me, and hopefully in others, a mostly pleasing emotion or reaction.

Customer comment on 'Little Owl (Small Carved Wood on Post carvings/statues/statuettes)' by Nigel Sardeson

Thank you for providing me with such a great service and wonderful sculpture

I can say more....

It`s a present for my fathers 80th and the perfect thing to have found for someone who already has most things! He`s an ornithologist too and adores the garden. We have bought it as a family and Nigel engraved our family crest on to it and went out of his way to deliver it to us saving us a fortune! It`s so heavy!
